Planning & Designing a bathroom layout

Given our manic lifestyles the bathroom is becoming a more and more important place to relax, a sanctuary from the all the chaos around us.  Traditional pokey small bathrooms no longer fit the comfort needs of modern professionals.  The design of the bathroom is therefore vitally important in setting a relaxing mood at the same time being both contemporary and stylish, giving your home that WOW factor, that will help to add value, should you wish to sell your property.

In many homes, it the original designers treated the bathroom as a secondary thought, often squeezing them into the smallest possible space. We all must have visited houses witch had a hideous little downstairs bathroom, next to the kitchen, as their main bathroom  - as if they considered it a necessary evil. Badly designed bathrooms can be one of the bleakest & coldest rooms in the home. With a modest cash outlay and some thoughful bathroom interior design you can transform an old uninspiring bathroom into the height of bathroom style and comfort.

If you are lucky enough to be designing a new home, or a house extension which will include a new bathroom or just revamping a tired property with contemporary bathroom facilities, you can influence the size and layout of the bathroom in your home.

Even if you don't have the luxury of extending your home you can still remodel an existing bathroom.  Even if you are restricted by its physical size & location, it is still possible to work wonders. Remember a couple of key facts,

  • Replacing a bathroom suite doesn't mean that you have to keep the layout the same; any respectable plumber will be able to change the position of piping for you.
  • It is not even mandatory to use the same room same room you can always remove walls change the position, or add new doors & windows. Designing you dream bathroom will depend entirely on how much time & effort you are willing to invest and how much inconvenience you are able to put up with.

There are four basic steps you should follow when carrying out home bathroom design,

Step 1 - Mark down the position of existing fixtures and fittings on your planpay particular attention to doors, windows existing plumbing points.

Step 2 - Mark on your plan where the new fixtures and fittings will go.

Step 3 - Evaluate whether any structural work will need to be done. eg moving windows, walls, doors etc

Step 4 - Check to see if any of the following services will be effected by your new home bathroom design.

  • Drains
  • Water Supply & boiler
  • Electricity

The above has given you a high level overview of what is needed to carry out home bathroom design; It should give you a good starting point from which to carry out your bathroom revamp. Remember to keep things simple and allow enough time and resources.
